How to Turn a Vocabulary List Into a Quiz
Photograph a paper vocabulary list and get a multiple-choice or written quiz. Here are the five steps for first-time users.
update Last updated: August 13, 2026
Hello Word reads your vocabulary images with AI, extracts the words, meanings and pronunciations, and lets you take a quiz on them right away. You never retype a word, and you can use it free up to three times a day without signing up.
Step 1 — Photograph your vocabulary list
A textbook word list, your own notebook, or a printout all work. Three things make recognition much more reliable.
- Shoot straight on so the text isn't skewed. A curved page gutter is the most common cause of missed rows.
- Avoid shadows. A hand shadow under a ceiling light lowers character contrast.
- Keep words and meanings in one frame. If the sides are cut off, pairs get mismatched.
Tables with English and Korean side by side, numbered lists, and card layouts are all recognized. Handwriting works too, but less accurately than print.
Step 2 — Upload the image
Tap the upload area on the home screen or drag files onto it. You can upload several images at once and review them in the queue. Each image can be up to 50MB.
Step 3 — Wait while the AI extracts the words
A progress bar appears after upload. One image usually takes from a dozen to several dozen seconds, longer for complex tables or handwriting. Words, Korean meanings and English pronunciations are produced in this step.
Step 4 — Review and correct the results
You don't have to accept what the AI read. You can edit any misread word and add words that weren't in the photo. Your corrections are saved and used in later quizzes.
Step 5 — Choose a quiz format and start
Pick multiple choice or written answers, set how many questions you want, and start. After the quiz your score is saved, wrong answers go into your history, and repeatedly missed words show up in the cumulative review.
If recognition goes wrong
Partial extraction or mismatched meanings almost always come from the photo. Check these in order.
- Look for blur or missed focus. If the strokes smear, retaking the photo is faster than fixing it.
- Check the gap between the word column and the meaning column. Columns that nearly touch can be read as one block.
- Light text on a dark background (a dark-mode screenshot, for example) recognizes worse. Printed material on a light background is the most accurate.
- If it still doesn't match, correcting it in Step 4 is the sure fix.
Where your quiz history lives
Finishing a quiz records your score and how long it took. Recent scores and your average appear at the top of the home screen, so studying the same range over several days shows up as numbers rather than a feeling.
History is kept per slot. Splitting subjects across slots lets you follow each one separately and see where your time is better spent.
Uploading several images
If your list spans several pages, upload them together. Selected images stack up in the queue in order, and you can review the list before sending them. Remove anything you picked by mistake.
How many images one use covers depends on your plan: one on the free plan, up to five on Pro. More images also means longer analysis, so when you're in a hurry, upload only the range you're studying today.
What changes when you sign in
You can build lists and take quizzes three times a day without an account. Without signing in, though, your vocabulary lives only in that browser — a list made on your phone won't show up on your computer, and clearing browser data removes it.
Signing in stores your lists on your account so they follow you across devices. Quiz scores and wrong answers accumulate too, and CSV/JSON export requires a login.
What reads well, and what doesn't
Results vary noticeably with what you photograph. Accuracy runs roughly in this order.
- Printed tables — English on the left, Korean meanings on the right. Most published word books and school handouts fall here, and they read best.
- Numbered lists — the numbers mark row boundaries, so pairs rarely get mismatched.
- Card layouts — boxes pairing a word with its meaning are recognized too.
- Handwritten notes — recognized, but below print. Write clearly and leave room between the word and its meaning.
Three things are hard: screenshots with light text on a dark background, two-column layouts where word and meaning nearly touch, and photos where a fold or shadow crosses the text. In those cases retaking the photo beats correcting the result.
Using vocabulary slots
A slot holds one vocabulary list. The free plan has one, Pro has three. If you're studying for more than one thing, keep them in separate slots — everything in a single slot means you can't pick a range, and unrelated words end up in the quiz.
Slot 1 for this week's unit, slot 2 for coursework terms, slot 3 for words you keep missing, for example. You can rename slots so it's clear what's inside.
Choosing a quiz format
Three settings before you start. Each one changes which words get filtered out.
- Format — multiple choice picks from options; written answers make you type. Multiple choice suits a new range; switch to written once you're comfortable, or words you only half-know will keep slipping through.
- Number of questions — you can quiz on part of a large list. Short sessions repeated often beat one long one.
- Direction — word to meaning, or meaning to word. The second is harder and worth practising if your exam asks you to write the words.
Reviewing what you missed
Each quiz saves your score and the questions you got wrong. Words you miss repeatedly are grouped in the cumulative review. As an exam approaches, that list is a better use of your time than the full vocabulary list, since you stop re-checking words you already know.
Three things people run into at first
- Shooting two pages at once — the curved gutter reads poorly. One page per photo is safer.
- Starting the quiz without checking the extraction — a misread word becomes a question. Thirty seconds in step 4 saves it.
- Putting every subject in one list — you lose the ability to pick a range. Split them across slots instead.
What the free plan covers
The free plan gives you three uses per day and one vocabulary slot, and you can export what you build as CSV or JSON. If you need more uses or slots, see Pricing. Common questions are answered in the FAQ.
